Hope you were able to fix some of your site's technical issues with Site Audit. Today, I want to share some of my favorite SEO tips you can immediately gain value from with AWT.
Watch the video or keep scrolling for the text version.
Tip #1: Preserve link equity by fixing broken backlinks
If you have broken backlinks pointing at your pages, then you’re not getting any value from those links. But if you redirect or revive these pages, you can preserve link equity which can help your pages rank higher in Google.
Here’s how:
- Enter your domain in Site Explorer
- Go to Best by Links
- Set the HTTP code filter to 404 and scan your broken pages with backlinks.
- Hit the number in the referring domains column to quickly spot check the quality of a page’s referring domains.
- If these backlinks are valuable to you, redirect the URL to a relevant page or revive the 404 page.
In our case, we would redirect the /labs/seo-toolbar URL to our live SEO toolbar page (/seo-toolbar).
With a premium plan, you can follow the exact same process on competing domains to find broken link building opportunities.

Tip #2: Find low-hanging featured snippet opportunities
Featured snippets are brief answers to a user’s query which are displayed at the top of Google’s search results.
They take up a lot of real estate in the SERPs, pushing organic listings further down. Translation:
if your page doesn’t own the featured snippet and it's ranking in the bottom half of the SERP, then you likely won’t get a lot of clicks from that query.
The solution? Earn the featured snippet. Here’s how to find opportunities for your site:
- Enter your domain in Site Explorer
- Go to the Organic Keywords report
- Set a position filter to the top 10
- Set a SERP features filter to “featured snippets” and “where target doesn’t rank”
Now you have a list of keywords where a featured snippet exists but your site doesn’t own it.

Tip #3: Find internal linking opportunities to boost important pages
Internal links are important because they help Google discover new content and you can use them to pass PageRank to important pages. Best of all, you’re in full control of where they’re placed and the context of those links.
The Link Opportunities report in Site Audit will automatically find internal linking opportunities for you based on your site’s keyword rankings. Here’s how to use it:
- Run a full crawl of your website
- Go to the Link Opportunities report
- Set filters that match what you want to accomplish.
For example, in the screenshot below, Link Opportunities shows me 97 internal link building suggestions for our guide on internal linking.

Tip #4: Monitor new backlinks to your site
With AWT, you can monitor backlinks to your verified sites with Alerts.
This tool will send you monthly email reports, showing you new and lost backlinks to your site. You can use it to monitor for link spam or to passively find potential people/companies to partner with.
Here’s how to set it up.
- Click on the “More” menu and select Alerts.
- Edit the alert for your domain.
- Change the Scope to “New”
- Set any metrics filters (e.g. From DR 30 and From domain traffic 1,000)
- Hit save
With a premium plan, you can monitor new and lost backlinks to any website or page. For example, if you wanted to rank for a competitive query, you might set up multiple backlinks alerts for the top ranking pages.
So anytime they get a backlink, you’d be in the know and can reach out if there’s an opportunity for your page to be mentioned too.
In addition, you’ll be able to monitor the web for search queries like your brand name with Mentions Alerts.
